Wakeboarding: a sport so cool, lots of people have yet to learn about it. In fact it's the fastest growing watersport in the country. It's like a cross between water-skiing, snowboarding and surfing (it used to be called skurfing, but that sounded silly). You're pulled across the water by hanging onto a cable, but unlike water-skiing you're attached to a single wide board and it's also a bit slower. So it's perfect for anyone who wants to try a new sport and doesn't mind getting very wet indeed. After a full safety briefing, you'll be on the water and round the cable. You'll start off knee-boarding, which will help you get to grips with the basics and put the theory into practice. The tricky bit is taking corners, but once you've got the hang of that you'll be up on your feet and whizzing around on your wakeboard in no time, experiencing the adrenaline rush of flying across the water. Not even the occasional dunking will wipe the smile off your face.

Try out one of the fastest growing water sports and get to grips with paddling a kayak in a group environment. During the session, you can expect to learn the basics of paddle and boat control as well as general river safety, with instruction taking place in a safe boating area two to three feet deep. Once the basics are mastered, head out into calm sections of the river under the supervision of qualified instructors. Take a trip through the beautiful Jephson Gardens and local nature reserve to explore and participate in games and challenges to put your new skills to the test. Kayaks were originally developed by indigenous people of Arctic regions, who used the boats to hunt on inland lakes, rivers and coastal waters. The first kayaks consisted of stitched animal skins such as seal stretched over a wooden frame. Don't worry, today they are a little more high tech, made from rotomoulded plastic, wood, fabric over wooden or aluminum frame, fiberglass, Kevlar or carbon fibre.

Scuba diving always looks so tempting on holiday, but if you've never tried it before then it can seem like going in at the deep end (pun fully intended). Back in rainy Britain it's very easy to forget why diving seemed so appealing (a bit like ouzo, or that perma-tanned rep). But learning how to scuba dive is a ticket to a lifetime of underwater adventure and this two-person experience is a perfect introduction to the sport. You'll get expert instruction on safety and underwater mobility techniques, then you'll learn how to breathe underwater and achieve weightlessness while getting used to the equipment. Courses take place in swimming pools under controlled conditions - and while it might seem a long way from diving in a tropical ocean, it's the perfect way to get a basic grounding in diving and find out whether you like it. It's also ideal for anyone considering taking a PADI Open Water Diving Course.

We know that spending an hour in a tank of water might sound at first like a David Blaine-style stunt - but in fact this experience is about total relaxation. You'll lie in a quiet, darkened room in a warm solution of Epsom salts, about 10 inches deep and so dense that you'll float effortlessly (no need to be able to swim!). Epsom salts are made from naturally occurring minerals and have long been renowned for their health and beauty benefits, including easing stress and soothing muscles. Gentle music will play to help you wind down, and you'll drift into a near-meditative state of complete calm. Afterwards you can take a refreshing shower before returning to the outside world feeling utterly chilled out.

Ahoy there me hearties! Splice the main brace, shiver me timbers and other such nautical nonsense... there'll be none of that on this experience, offering an introduction to sailing in a friendly and informal atmosphere. It's great fun - exhilarating and relaxing at the same time, and the best way to take in the beauty and freedom of the open sea. Your experience begins with a safety briefing, then your Yachtmaster skipper will introduce you to the basics of sailing. In no time at all you'll be out at sea, sailing on open water in the evening light. If you're feeling energetic you can put theory into practice and take an active part in crewing, but if you'd rather you can just sit back in the secure cockpit and enjoy the evening. After a couple of hours on the water, (depending on the booking made) you may be offered a glass of chilled white wine as you sail back into port, or to join the crew for a drink afterwards locally. All in all a very civilised approach to a wonderful pastime!

If you fancy doing something a bit more adventurous on your day off than just washing the car, and you don't mind getting a bit wet (although in fairness that can happen washing the car), then give kayaking a try. It's fun, it's active, and it's also a great way to see some of Britain's loveliest countryside. Your experience begins with a safety briefing and an outline of basic handling techniques from your expert instructor. Then go out onto the water in your one-person kayak. You'll be shown a variety of skills used by the experts and you'll quickly get the hang of handling your boat. Kayaking is great fun and can't be beaten for the sheer pleasure of powering yourself silently across the water. The stunning scenery of Wales makes a perfect backdrop to a sea kayaking adventure. Or choose the splendour of going out onto a Scottish loch. Alternatively you can kayak in the middle of England. Wherever you choose, all venues suit beginners and those wanting to brush up on their skills.

Rediscover your sense of adventure - and what it's like to be soaked to the skin! Canyoning is a truly all-round adventure experience, following a natural water course through a precipitous canyon. To start off with you'll have a safety briefing with your instructor and get kitted out with the right equipment. Then after a short walk to the top of the beautiful Allt' a Bhealaich Gorge, you'll follow the natural water course down through the gorge, descending waterfalls, sliding down natural water flumes, scrambling down gorges and jumping into deep, clear rock pools. In some sections you'll use harnesses and ropes to get down, all safely controlled by your instructor. This is a challenging, exciting and very physical experience and you might get a few bumps along the way, but there's a path running along the length of the canyon, so no part of the descent is compulsory - you can always take the path instead.

Surfing is no longer the preserve of teenagers who call everyone dude - because the rest of the world has cottoned on to how much fun it is. You'll learn the basics of surfing practice and etiquette and by the end of the day you'll be catching some waves with the best of them. In your morning lesson you'll learn about safety, basic paddling techniques, board trim and steering, standing up (the hard bit!), wave selection and rights of way. Then after lunch spend the whole afternoon practising your new skills among the waves, with a professional on hand if you need one. Surfboards and wetsuits are provided and all instructors are highly qualified and experienced surfers with SLSA Lifeguard and First Aid qualifications. The school is part of WAVES (Water Activity Voluntary Endorsement Scheme) which is supported by the RNLI Beach Lifeguard Service. So come and find out what all the fuss is about - you'll never forget the thrill of riding your first wave.
